Why Motorcycles Have Exceptional Power-to-Weight Ratios

A motorcycle's secret weapon is its low mass. Where a family car weighs 1,400–2,000 kg, a middleweight sportbike tips the scales at just 180–210 kg. That means even a relatively modest engine produces a P/W ratio that most supercars can't match.

A modern 600cc sportbike producing 89 kW at 183 kg achieves 0.49 kW/kg — comparable to a Ferrari. A litre-class superbike at 147 kW / 199 kg reaches 0.74 kW/kg, putting it far ahead of nearly every production car.

Worked Examples

  • Honda CB500F (commuter): 35 kW / 192 kg = 0.18 kW/kg — slightly above LAMS limit, capable learner bike.
  • Kawasaki Ninja 650 (LAMS): 50 kW / 192 kg = 0.26 kW/kg — wait, check LAMS compliance with the LAMS calculator.
  • Yamaha YZF-R6 (600cc sport): 89 kW / 183 kg = 0.49 kW/kg
  • Suzuki GSX-R1000 (litre sport): 147 kW / 202 kg = 0.73 kW/kg
  • Ducati Panigale V4R (superbike): 186 kW / 193 kg = 0.96 kW/kg — approaching MotoGP territory.

FAQs

Should I use wet weight or dry weight?
Use wet weight (with all fluids) for accurate real-world P/W. Dry weight (no fuel or oil) makes the ratio look better on paper but doesn't reflect the bike you actually ride. Manufacturer specs sometimes list both — always prefer wet weight for comparison.
Is my motorcycle LAMS approved?
In Australia, LAMS-approved bikes must have a P/W ratio at or below 150 kW/tonne (0.15 kW/kg). Use our LAMS calculator which includes an automatic pass/fail indicator.
Which motorcycle has the highest power-to-weight ratio?
Among production road bikes, the Kawasaki Ninja H2R (non-road-legal) produces around 228 kW at 216 kg — over 1.05 kW/kg. Among road-legal bikes, the Ducati Panigale V4R and BMW M 1000 RR are near the top at around 0.90–1.0 kW/kg.
