How to Use This Car P/W Calculator

Enter your car's power output (from the manufacturer spec sheet) and its kerb weight (weight without passengers or cargo). The calculator divides power by mass to give you the power-to-weight ratio. Results update instantly as you type.

Use kW/kg for European specs or when comparing with other metric figures. Switch to hp/lb for US automotive forums and drag-racing contexts.

Worked Examples

  • Family sedan (Toyota Camry): 131 kW / 1,575 kg = 0.083 kW/kg — comfortable everyday performance.
  • Hot hatch (VW Golf GTI): 180 kW / 1,412 kg = 0.127 kW/kg — brisk acceleration with everyday usability.
  • Sports car (Porsche 911 Carrera): 283 kW / 1,515 kg = 0.187 kW/kg — strong performance with refined handling.
  • Supercar (Lamborghini Huracán): 449 kW / 1,422 kg = 0.316 kW/kg — blistering acceleration.
  • F1 car (2023 season): ~960 kW / 798 kg = 1.20 kW/kg — otherworldly performance.

FAQs

Does P/W ratio predict 0-60 mph time?
It's a strong predictor but not the only factor. Traction, gearing, launch control, aerodynamics, and tyre grip all play roles. As a rough guide, a car with 0.15 kW/kg will typically run 0-60 in around 5–6 seconds, while 0.30+ kW/kg usually means sub-4 seconds with good traction.
Should I use kerb weight or gross weight?
Use kerb weight for performance comparisons — that's the vehicle ready to drive (full fluids, no passengers). Gross vehicle weight (GVW) includes maximum payload and gives a much lower P/W that isn't useful for acceleration comparisons.
What car has the best production power-to-weight ratio?
Among road-legal production cars, the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ (1,176 kW / 1,978 kg ≈ 0.595 kW/kg) and the Koenigsegg Jesko (1,103 kW / 1,420 kg ≈ 0.777 kW/kg) are among the highest. Electric hypercars like the Rimac Nevera (1,100 kW / 2,150 kg ≈ 0.51 kW/kg) are also at the top.
